The Landy Trophy 2025 - "an event like no other"....
Victorian Masters Athletics (VMA) proudly presents the 16th edition of The Landy Trophy, planned to take place PM 30 November 2025. Named in honour of Australian athletics legend John Landy, this iconic event was founded by VMA stalwart Richard Trembath. It celebrates speed, endurance, and the enduring spirit of competition among masters athletes. It truly is an "event like no other".
Competition Format
The Landy Trophy consists of three age-graded, handicapped races. Refer to the information email sent to all VMA members which shows the actual distance an athlete will run in each race, based on their age.
1. Qualifying 1 - 200m – Run in lanes
2. Qualifying 2 - 1009m – 'Pro-style' (no lanes), approx. 40 mins after 200m
3. Final - 400m:
- Main Final: Top 8 qualifiers based on combined placings in the 200m & 1009m Qualifying races.
- Consolation Finals: Pro-style, no lanes
Registration PRE-ENTRY Process
To determine feasibility of actually staging the event a PRE-ENTRY process has been introduced. 80 athletes are required to complete PRE-ENTRY for the event to proceed.
• Pre-Entry: Register interest (no payment required) or obligation to compete via this registration form. Subject to 80 PRE-ENTRY expressions of entry for the event, EVENT ENTRY will start in early October.
NOTE: PRE-ENTRY inside the first 80 will guarantee a place in the event; in the event of high PRE-ENTRY numbers' it may be necessary to limit final numbers for the event.
What happens at the event
The plan is to "change up" the event with a DJ and as mentioned, with all athletes running 3 events for the first time. There will be awards/prizes on offer for all athletes. The main prize is the Landy trophy. Others are the Landy stalwart trophy for athletes who have a long history in the Landy - last year's inaugural winner was Chris Worsnop. The 400m consolation finals will have awards/prizes for winners and "lucky losers". A new award will be the Landy medal for the athlete with the best total time who beats John Landy's mile PB time of 3m57.9s across the 200m/10009m/400m races. More than anything though "the Landy" as it is often referred to is meant to be a fun day of masters athletics competition.
